Rep. Nancy Mace files resolution to strip Rep. Omar of committees over Kirk assassination statements

Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina filed a formal resolution to censure Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and remove her from her seats on the House Budget Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

In announcing the measure, Mace accused Omar of defending political violence and refusing to condemn the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, who was shot in cold blood during an outdoor event at a university in Utah on Sept. 10.

“Ilhan Omar has shown us exactly who she is: someone who defends political violence and refuses to condemn the loss of innocent lives when it doesn’t suit her agenda, even the cold-blooded assassination of Charlie Kirk,” Mace said in a statement.

The move comes after Omar’s interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan on Sept. 11, where she called the video of Kirk’s shooting “mortifying” but then criticized Kirk’s history of rhetoric on gun violence and his remarks about George Floyd, as justification for his death.

Omar rejected Republican claims that the left bore responsibility for the assassination, calling such accusations “full of s—.” She also accused Rep. Mace and other Republicans of harassment and pointed to President Donald Trump’s rhetoric as responsible for political violence.

Following the interview, Omar clarified on social media that while she “vehemently” disagreed with Kirk politically, her “heart breaks” for his family.

She and House Democrats point to Republican figures who have used inflammatory rhetoric without facing formal punishment.

Conservatives, however, seized on Omar’s comments as evidence of bias and indifference. Rep. Buddy Carter of Georgia introduced his own resolution to censure Omar on Sept. 14, while figures such as Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado are backing Mace’s measure. Calls for Omar’s resignation or expulsion trended widely on social media, with critics labeling her remarks “disqualifying.”

As of Monday, House leadership has not scheduled a vote on the resolution. The effort fits into a broader GOP push to target radicalized“Squad” members with censure measures in recent months.

Mace, who has faced threats in the wake of her resolution, has increased her personal security, including carrying a firearm while in South Carolina.
