YouGov poll: Most Americans see Charlie Kirk’s assassin as motivated by the political left

A new YouGov poll finds that most Americans believe the man who assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk was driven by left-wing political views, though sharp partisan divides shape how people interpret the attack.

Among all U.S. adults surveyed, 37% said the assassin was motivated by left-wing beliefs, 17% by right-wing beliefs, 20% by something other than political ideology, and 30% were unsure.

The partisan breakdown reveals a deep divide:

  • Democrats: Only 10% said the assassin was motivated by left-wing beliefs, while 33% said right-wing beliefs were to blame. Another 17% pointed to nonpolitical motives, and 37% said they were not sure.
  • Independents: 32% said left-wing beliefs, 16% right-wing beliefs, 17% something other than politics, and 35% were unsure.
  • Republicans: A striking 68% said the assassin was motivated by left-wing beliefs, 5% by right-wing beliefs, 11% by something else, and 16% said they were not sure.

The data shows that while the general public leans toward attributing the killing to left-wing ideology, Democrats stand apart in seeing right-wing motives as more likely. Republicans, by contrast, overwhelmingly believe the assassin was driven by the left.

The assassination of Kirk, who was killed last week, has become a flashpoint in American politics. His memorial service was held Sunday and was attended by hundreds of thousands, with millions from around the world watching the televised program.

  1. When only 10% of any group simply disregards basic facts, it is obvious that propaganda and brainwashing has been wildly successful.

  2. I look at it more as the 22 year old had a psychological breakdown due to his childhood experiences: the hardness of growing up in a religious household of attending Latter Day Saints church lot’s of rules and expectations to live up to, then returning home to have a police dad with his own rules and expectations at home, a quiet, impressionable and vulnerable even overlooked boy who is vulnerable to radical extremism. That 22 year old was one of the Lost boys of the West Charlie was trying to get through.

It sorry that Charlie didn’t survive it, he will had given a well rounded well thought out analysis and perspective

  3. Something Charlie didn’t touch was debating on Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints when students who were Mormon attempted to debate him on it being the true religion as they believed
Every person in the Church of Christ (not of any religion) the body of Christ of believers following sorely Christ we all know Mormons are deceived. Just as anyone they need still need ti accept Jesus and only Jesus for who he is not what their founders made him out to be. Something that Republican Christians will not speak openly because of the fear of political backlash.
