The US Secret Service has dismantled a sophisticated network of electronic devices across the New York tristate area that posed an imminent threat to senior government officials and the agency’s protective operations.
The incident came during a timeframe that included President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations General Assembly, in New York. At the moment he and First Lady Melania Trump stepped onto the escalator of the building, it stopped functioning altogether. Then, his teleprompter failed when he stepped to the microphone.
According to the Secret Service, the protective intelligence investigation uncovered more than 300 co-located SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards operating at multiple sites. Investigators say the devices were capable of supporting a wide range of telecommunications attacks, including disabling cell phone towers, launching denial-of-service operations, and facilitating encrypted communications between criminal actors.
While analysis is still underway, early forensic examination reportedly indicates cellular traffic between nation-state threat actors and individuals already known to federal law enforcement.
The devices were concentrated within 35 miles of the United Nations headquarters, where world leaders are currently gathered for the annual General Assembly. Officials described the timing and location as significant, noting the potential for disruption to citywide communications.
The operation was led by the Secret Service’s newly established Advanced Threat Interdiction Unit, which focuses on identifying and neutralizing the most pressing threats to protectees.
The Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations, the Department of Justice, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the New York Police Department, and other state and local partners assisted in the investigation.
The probe remains active as federal agencies continue examining the seized equipment.
