Soros Foundation gave $80 million to groups tied to extremist violence: Report

A new report from the watchdog group Capital Research Center alleges that billionaire George Soros’s philanthropic web has funneled tens of millions of dollars to organizations tied to extremist violence and terrorism.

The 48-page report, titled “Exclusive: Soros’ Open Society Gave $80 Million to Pro-Terror Groups,” was authored by CRC investigative researcher Ryan Mauro and released last week. It examines tax filings and grant records from the Open Society Foundations, the global network founded by Soros and now led by his son, Alexander Soros.

According to CRC, OSF awarded more than $80 million in grants since 2016 to groups “tied to terrorism or extremist violence,” including at least $23 million to organizations in the United States that it says directly assist domestic terrorism and criminal activity.

The report alleges that funding supported groups linked to violence, property destruction, economic sabotage, and harassment — activities the FBI classifies under the definition of domestic terrorism.

The report divides Open Society’s grantmaking into three categories:

  • Domestic Terrorism and Criminality: At least $23.3 million to US-based organizations accused of supporting or engaging in violent actions. This includes more than $2 million to the Sunrise Movement, which CRC says has supported the “Stop Cop City” protests in Atlanta, where dozens of individuals face charges ranging from domestic terrorism to racketeering. Other recipients include activist training networks such as the Center for Third World Organizing and the Ruckus Society, alleged to have promoted sabotage tactics during the 2020 riots.
  • International Pro-Terror Support: Roughly $2.3 million was given to groups with ties to designated terrorist organizations. CRC highlights grants to Al-Haq, a West Bank–based organization that has faced longstanding allegations of links to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Earlier this month, the US government sanctioned Al-Haq for “illegitimate targeting of Israel.”
  • Extremist or Communist Sympathizers: An estimated $54 million in additional funding was given to organizations the report describes as promoting radical ideologies, including groups linked to Antifa networks and the 2020 George Floyd protests.

The grants may be evidence that Soros’s philanthropy plays a direct role in fueling extremism in both domestic and international contexts.

The report comes as the Trump Administration continues to prioritize domestic extremism as a national security concern, and just days after President Trump formally designated Antifa as a terrorist organization.

Mainstream and left-leaning outlets have ignored the report by the Capital Research Center, which is known for its investigations of political philanthropy.
