Following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk last week, a group of House Republicans is pressing congressional leaders to launch a new investigation into what they describe as a nationwide pattern of politically motivated violence.
Led by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, more than two dozen lawmakers including Alaska’s Congressman Nick Begich, signed onto a letter urging Speaker Mike Johnson, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, and Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer to create a Select Committee to Investigate the “Left’s Assault on America and the Rule of Law.”
Many commentators have observed that America has entered into a period of asymmetrical civil warfare from the Left.
The letter cites incidents ranging from the 2017 shooting of Republican lawmakers at a congressional baseball practice, to the 2024 assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, and to the recent killing of Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA.
The lawmakers argue that these events reflect what they call a “sustained breakdown of law and order” driven by ideological networks, funding streams, and political influence.
Congressman Roy and his colleagues point to several groups and individuals they say have contributed to the environment of violence, including Antifa, the Southern Poverty Law Center, and progressive donor networks. They also tie their concerns to the role of progressive prosecutors, immigration policy, and federal and international aid programs they argue have facilitated lawlessness.
“Enough is enough,” the letter states, calling for a committee with subpoena powers, prosecutorial expertise, and the authority to “follow the money” behind nongovernmental organizations, donors, and officials allegedly fueling unrest.
The signatories include Reps. Andy Biggs, Scott Perry, Mary Miller, Clay Higgins, Andy Ogles, Ben Cline, Lauren Boebert, Paul Gosar, Byron Donalds, and more than a dozen others.
The push comes amid heightened political concerns following Kirk’s killing.

Let’s see if I understand. JFK was assassinated in 1963. MLK and RFK in 1968. Numerous attempts were made thereafter on Reagan, Ford, etc. Then, two more on Trump. Finally, in 2025, the assassination of Charlie Kirk prompts the US House to form a “select committee on political violence? Is this Kabuki Theater? Or should we expect some constructive results?
