MAHA: Dr. Ben Carson sworn in as National Nutrition Advisor

Dr. Ben Carson was sworn in this week as the first-ever National Advisor for Nutrition, Health, and Housing at the Department of Agriculture The newly created role makes the retired neurosurgeon and former Housing and Urban Development secretary the Trump Administration’s chief spokesperson on nutrition and health policy.

The appointment is part of the administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) agenda, which targets chronic disease prevention, rural healthcare expansion, and housing stability. Carson will work with USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins and directly advise President Donald Trump.

According to the USDA, Carson will guide initiatives ranging from nutrition programs to rural health investments. He is expected to take a leading role in implementing provisions of Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which aims to expand healthcare access in rural areas. Carson will also help shape reforms to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), including efforts to prevent federal benefits from being used to buy soda and junk food.

Carson’s medical background as a groundbreaking brain surgeon and his experience in housing policy during the first Trump Administration, makes him a good fit during Trump II. He founded the American Cornerstone Institute think tank after leaving HUD, has also focused on health and family well-being.

Carson’s swearing-in came just days after Trump announced that he will award Carson the Presidential Medal of Freedom next year, calling him one of the administration’s most trusted advisers.
